START WITH HOW YOU WANT TO FEEL
A motorhome journey gives you another way to combine travel and accommodation. The most rewarding plan balances driving, exploring and resting, with a clear place to stop each night.
Build a day around a few food stops and leave time to enjoy them. Park appropriately, explore busy areas on foot where practical and support local businesses along the way.
Plan fewer moves and longer pauses. Think about shade, water, suitable overnight parking and how you will manage outdoor equipment if conditions change.
Allow a comfortable pace for the vehicle and driver. Confirm route suitability and access to planned stops, and leave flexibility to change the day’s activities.
Agree on what everyone wants from the trip. Balance active days with rest, and account for children, accessibility needs, meal routines and personal space.
THREE WAYS TO IMAGINE IT
These sample three-day outlines show a possible rhythm for a trip. They are not bookable packages, driving directions or confirmed hub itineraries.
Keep island and mainland plans distinct until pickup arrangements, any vehicle ferry transport, rental permissions and schedules have been confirmed. Do not assume that a vehicle can move between all proposed destinations.
TURN THE IDEA INTO A PLAN
Choose a practical collection and return point. Allow time for the vehicle handover on the first day and for packing, refuelling and return checks on the last.
Choose a manageable driving day rather than filling every hour. Allow for breaks, traffic, unfamiliar roads and the additional care a larger vehicle may require.
Decide where you will spend each night and what facilities you need. Keep a suitable backup stop in mind rather than relying on unconfirmed overnight parking.
Choose one or two priorities for each day. Keep optional stops separate so you can adapt without feeling the trip has gone wrong.
Account for the rental, hub fees, fuel, tolls, food, activities and any insurance or extra charges. Keep deposits separate from expected spending and allow a contingency.
Save the itinerary, host contacts, pickup details and support numbers before departure. Keep an offline copy available if connectivity is limited.
TRAVEL WITH A LIGHT TOUCH
Ask hosts and local businesses for guidance on how to enjoy an area respectfully. Use designated facilities, avoid blocking access, keep noise considerate and take waste to appropriate disposal points.
Local meals, guided activities and community-run stops can make a trip more memorable while helping visitor spending reach the people who welcome you. Choose the experiences that fit your interests and ask what is included before agreeing to a service.
